The Xindian river is the largest of three primary tributaries of the Danshui watershed outlining the southern border of Taipei metropolis. The Nanshixi 南勢溪 and the Beishixi 北勢溪 come together in Gweishan 龜山 just below the Feitsui reservoir 翡翠水庫 to form the Xindian River 新店溪. The Beishixi is 50km in length draining an area of 310 square kilometers with it's head waters at Qilan Mtn. 棲蘭山. The Nanshixi, 45km long, draining an area of 332 sq km is the major contributor to the Xindian river of the two rivers. The Beishix has its headwaters in Taman Mtn. 塔曼山 and Quantoumu Mtn. 拳頭母山. Both tributaries flow down from the HsuehShan Range 雪山山脈. Drinking water for the Taipei area is not limited to the capacity of the FeiTsui reservoir since the reservoir is only filled by the Beishixi and the the inlet points for the Taipei water system are at the Zhitan 直潭水壩 and Qingtan 青潭水壩 dams, which are both downstream of both the Nanshixi and the Beishixi on the Xindian river.
The Feitsui reservoir 翡翠水庫, located 20 km south of Taipei downstream of the Beishi steam supplies drinking water to 5 million people in Taipei, Sanchong, Xindian, Yunghe, Zhonghe, Danshui, and Sanzhi. The Feitsui Reservoir, with a holding capacity of 406 million tons, has been providing raw water to the Taipei metropolis since its start-up in June 1987. The Feitsui Reservoir Project was commissioned in January 1979 and incorporates a 70,000 kw hydroelectric generator. The dam has a catchment Area of 303 km2, an area of 10.24 km2, water surface at 170 m, initial storage capacity of 406,000,000 m3 and effective storage after 50 yrs of 327,000,000 m3. Two water intake units are in operation on the Xindian river. The Qingtan Dam takes in 1.08 million cubic meters of raw water daily, which is conveyed by gravity through a tunnel to the Changhsing and Kungkuan Purification Plants for treatment. The Zhitan Dam collects up to 2.70 million cubic meters a day which is transmitted to the Zhitan Purification Plant for treatment.
