Localization and Translation

Where translation is converting something from one language into another, localization is the process of adapting communications to a locale. A locale describes a group of people within a common language and culture, for example french Canadians. So in addition to translating language, localization must take into account cultural factors, including technical and the legal environment of a locale.

Converting the idiomatic language associated with a product (document, software, business application, website, et cetera) or service into another language is an important part of localization.
